This Gala will be benefiting our Children’s Literacy Program - “The Journal Project - Our Stories”
Beginning in mid October of 2009, we piloted a program called “The Journal Project-Our Stories”. We took at risk teens from Christopher Columbus High School in the Bronx and teamed them up with Senior Citizens at the Pelham Parkway Nursing Home in the Bronx. The objective to this program is to preserve a generation of our history and to help increase interest in literacy by storytelling (and re-telling) of relevant topics told through relevant mechanism. We will pass along “our stories” through this intergenerational project. The benefits that participants will have are to show how “times have changed” and yet how times have “remained the same” through the eyes of our elders. Also, to have these stories captured by appropriate peer groups to re-tell to their peers, thereby completing the circle of literacy (story telling and then re-telling). In the beginning the teens seemed to not show interest. A few weeks after the program they began to see the sensitive side and learned more than they expected from the seniors that were visited and even the seniors in their neighborhood. With your help, we are hoping to begin this program in many more schools starting in NYC.
